Proud wheelie. Disability advocate. Circus and performance artist. Adaptive athlete. These are a few of the ways April Hubbard describes herself. As a community builder, she’s worked tirelessly to create a more equitable and accessible world from her home in Halifax. In addition to her many achievements, Hubbard recently planned her own funeral, which she attended while still very much alive. Held at a theatre and filled with performances, it brought everyone together to celebrate their friend. Having spent her life with a tethered spinal cord and chronic pain, Hubbard decided to access medical assistance in dying (MAID), a relatively recent option in Canada that remains controversial with some groups. Following her through the approval process and subsequent outpouring of emotion and reactions from those who know her best, this intimate portrait shares a compassionate understanding of MAID’s importance. It provides comfort and closure to individuals to know they have control over their quality of life. Alexander Rogalski
