When Eric “Roach” Denis burst onto screen in Daniel Cross’ S.P.I.T., he was a “squeegee kid” living in derelict buildings in Montreal, on the run from the police. Given a mini camera to document his world, he captured the DIY realities of street life with raw urgency and youthful rebellion. A groundbreaking, human portrait of street culture, S.P.I.T. is now considered a classic Canadian doc. The influential film has not had greater impact than on Roach himself, who subsequently turned his life around, becoming an activist and a filmmaker in his own right.
