Description

Michka Saäl's Spoon builds on her past documentary work and is infused with her signature poetic style. Here, she explores her relationship with an incarcerated American man, Spoon, though their dialogues, his poetry, dance and the Mojave Desert. Saäl passed away last year, and never received the recognition at home or abroad that her talent merited. Her work addressed issues of race and exile and examined those forced into invisibility on the margins. "She really was an unfortunately overlooked director," wrote Charlotte Selb in suggesting Saäl for Redux. "As a woman, an immigrant and just somebody who wasn't much of a festival politician, she wasn't always getting the recognition she deserved." As is the aim of Redux, we hope this spotlight on Saäl will bring her to new audiences, as her films continue to reverberate with meaning in our present moment. Kiva Reardon
