They had three goals: get Estonia independent, get their own currency, and get Russian troops out. Flashback to 1992 for a revealing look at how a group of young guns—a forester, history teacher, and former political prisoner to name a few—won Estonia’s first free elections since the Second World War. At 32, Mart Laar, the oldest of the idealistic lot, became Europe’s youngest prime minister. That was the least of his challenges. Neither he nor his cabinet ministers knew much about politics or economics and Estonia was flat broke. They had to learn fast, taking the country and each other by the horns to forge a nation and a viable economy out of chaos.
