Breathtaking black-and-white shots and an intoxicating mix of magic, black comedy, and romance takes audiences into a pagan Estonian village where werewolves, the plague, and spirits run riot. Adapted from the best-selling Estonian novel Rehepapp by Andrus Kivirähk, this feature film tells the story of villagers who will stop at nothing to survive a cold, dark winter, including stealing from one another, witchcraft, and any kind of deception. When a farm girl sets her sights on marrying a village boy who’s smitten with a young baroness, there’s no telling what machinations they’ll concoct to snag the heart of their obsession.
