For more than a century, Wassily Kandinsky has been unanimously considered the originator of abstract art—but sometimes history has to be rewritten. Swedish artist Hilma af Klint's first abstract painting is dated 1906, years before Kandinsky's celebrated breakthroughs. Currently the subject of a monumental Guggenheim exhibition entitled "Paintings for the Future," af Klint (1862–1944) is finally getting the credit she deserves.
