Description

For more than a century, Wassily Kandinsky has been unanimously considered the originator of abstract art—but sometimes history has to be rewritten. Swedish artist Hilma af Klint's first abstract painting is dated 1906, years before Kandinsky's celebrated breakthroughs. Currently the subject of a monumental Guggenheim exhibition entitled "Paintings for the Future," af Klint (1862–1944) is finally getting the credit she deserves. Beyond the Visible investigates just why it took so long to happen, the stubborn mechanisms behind canonization and the art world's reluctance to give a woman her rightful place in history. Unseen in her lifetime, af Klint's paintings weren't exhibited until the 1980s; this documentary helps unveil a complex and timeless oeuvre and the visionary behind it. Discover the untold story of a pioneer of modern art, her inspiring work and the troubling path it took to be recognized. Adam Cook
