At the end of 2018, Pepita Ferrari—documentary filmmaker, advocate and former executive director of the Documentary Organization of Canada—died at the age of 66. In addition to her work behind the camera, Ferrari, as POV wrote, "provided a voice for innovations in documentary and encouraged filmmakers to constantly question the forms of their approach." It's a fitting tribute to Ferrari, then, to be showing her film Capturing Reality: The Art of Documentary. Ferrari put 33 of the leading voices in documentary filmmaking in front of the camera—including the iconic Alanis Obomsawin, Oscar-winner Laura Poitras, iconoclast Werner Herzog, chronicler of history and dreams Patricio Guzmán and agitator Kim Longinotto, to name a few. The results are candid behind-the-scenes stories of some classic documentaries, as well as clips from over 50 films that give both artistic and practical insights into the form. Kiva Reardon
