Following six years in prison on terrorism charges, Tawfiq comes back to the mountainous Tunisian countryside to find his wife has returned to Bosnia and he must raise his three daughters alone. After 10 years of no contact, director and family friend Fatma Riahi seeks out the joyous family she once knew, finding instead a broken father raising daughters tormented by grief. Pictures that are too difficult to look at await storage in the new house they are building. And though Fatma's arrival comes as the walls and roof are being completed, what she unearths is their shaky foundation. Each mundane chore and intimate moment is laden with anger and dreams deferred. Will Tawfiq's resolve to protect his daughters from future harm extend to forgiving their mother? A Haunted Past is a lesson on the complexities of trauma, where revenge may be sweet, but "reality is bitter." Nataleah Hunter-Young
