One in three British women will have an abortion in their lifetime, yet the social taboo around it persists. When faced with an unwanted pregnancy, teenagers in particular fear their families' reactions and undergo the procedure in secrecy. Inspired by the successful stage play of the same name, this film fuses delicate subject matter with wicked humour and inventive performance technique. Four young actresses of different ethnic and social backgrounds play interchangeable roles to recount real-life abortion experiences across the UK. Listening to the original recorded interviews through earphones, they repeat the testimonies verbatim and bring the audience as close to the truth as possible. Interweaving spoken word and song, this candid, funny and touching performative doc opens up the conversation around abortion in a thought-provoking way, at a time when reproductive rights are once again under threat.
