Description

In the '80s, under Suharto's regime, tattooed people in Indonesia were identified as criminals and targeted by death squads. Today, the young punks of Jakarta are shunned by their families and left to fend for themselves on the fringes of society. Drifting through polluted and poverty-stricken urban landscapes, Eka and his teenage friends have a sombre view of their country's future. They feel closer to the environmentalist and anti-militarist ideals of the local Indigenous tribes, who struggle to maintain their traditional way of life as they lose forestland to capitalist interests. Despised by his stepfather, an army colonel, Eka craves a home and a family, but can only stage fantasy reunions on camera. In this dreamy, gorgeously shot hybrid film, Jimmy Hendrickx (a homonym promising talent and loud music!) draws from documentary, photography and performance to give a voice to the most marginalized members of Indonesian society.
