Artscapes: Creative minds, artistic pursuits and inventive filmmaking

With just a needle and thread, Britta Marakatt-Labba—internationally acclaimed Sámi textile artist and one of Sweden's most internationally sought-after artists—has produced powerful, artistic tapestries depicting the epic stories of Sámi history and mythology. Her threads stitch together Sámi culture and her own personal experiences with the wider global issues affecting Indigenous rights and climate change. As Marakatt-Labba prepares to unveil a new 24-metre-long embroidered work at art exhibition documenta 14 in Kassel, Germany, she gracefully welcomes audiences into her enrapturing storytelling. Her goal is to bring to life the stories of her community's rich culture and powerful leadership in the fight against the climate crisis. Meanwhile, her son struggles with whether he will be able to continue the family's age-old herding traditions in the face of climate change. Heather Haynes
