Celebrated Aboriginal artist and provocateur Richard Bell, who describes himself as an activist masquerading as an artist, is known for his confrontational and humorous work, a reputation that has propelled him to the forefront of Australia's contemporary art movement. His practice—he works primarily in video, performance, text and painting—is reflexive, commenting on discourses of the Western art canon while calling attention to the brutal history of colonization in Australia. In addition to a profile of Richard's career, we get an expansive history of 50 years of Aboriginal activism in Australia. Archival images of the Redfern movement of the 1970s and the Canberra Tent Embassy protest site offer insight into Bell's experience of front-line activism and the way his work links the fight for Australian Aboriginal sovereignty with the American Civil Rights movement. You Can Go Now offers a vital primer, not only on the work of Bell, but also on the significance of Aboriginal Australian currents of 20th- and 21st-century art. Selina Crammond
