In the aftermath of a series of tragedies in the 1980s, an island village in Cape Verde was abandoned by all its residents save one: 70-something Quirino. Now the sole inhabitant of Ribeira Funda, he is isolated by his village’s superstitious legacy and lives beneath the very real threat of the unstable cliffside that borders it. Amid the divine scenery of the island of São Nicolau, Quirino spends his days fishing and smoking, his one connection to the outside world being a radio that occasionally interrupts his solitude with news bulletins. While he has long lived in peace and quiet in this idyllic setting, Quirino senses his time is coming to a close. As the elderly man considers leaving his village along with the world of the living, The New Man’s transcendent visuals take on a spectral quality, reflecting what Ribeira Funda will soon become: a ghost town.
