Leos Carax (director of modern masterpieces Holy Motors, Annette and The Lovers on the Bridge) turns his lens inward in this experimental video essay doc. For an exhibition that in the end never took place, the Pompidou Museum asked the filmmaker to reply, in pictures, to the question: “Where are you at, Leos Carax?” With It’s Not Me, he attempts an answer. Fans of the director’s work will appreciate the film’s thoughtful collage of past characters and iconography (including a very special post-credits appearance from a “retired” fan favourite), while Carax newbies will be energized by this bold exploration of what it means for an artist to define oneself. At once more nakedly personal than Carax has ever been before, It’s Not Me concurrently fuels the myth of who “Leos Carax” is.
To break it all down further, It’s Not Me will be followed by a live on-stage discussion between Will Sloan and Justin Decloux: two of Toronto’s brightest film minds who together host the award-winning podcast The Important Cinema Club. Expect an illuminating, amusing and informative conversation as the two discuss the state of documentary—placing It’s Not Me in context within an expansive history of video essay filmmaking.
